Sam Russo – Freeze Track EP
Matt Tolfrey's Leftroom enters 2012 in the same fine form as last year with a young Sam Russo, the four track EP also featuring a super remix from Jay Hazes' FuckPony moniker.
Leftroom had a superb year in 2011, with Beatport No.1's, heavy club support for all their releases, and an ever growing roster of producers that would make any discerning listener weak at the knees. Sam Russo has been working hard too, making him an apt selection for the labels next move. Russo has firmly established a credible DJ name for himself, thanks to more support slots at Fabric in 2011 than any other non resident.
Freeze Track is a well produced record from top to bottom, exploring commonly untouched offshoots of house music. Russo showcases his passion for garage and deep house, effortlessly fusing the two together like many of his UK counterparts.
The title track is a moody number, which sees Russo showcase the sounds encountered in one of his DJ sets. A short stabby bass locks the huge drums into groove and with just a few other atmospherics and vocal samples. He's created a powerful rhythm worthy of any decent crowd.
Bus Four is the stand out track for me, capitalizing on the rising sounds of UK bass, Russo incorporates a dubby bassline with more solid drums held together with pitched down vocal samples and the standard house string. Everything sounds quite analog, which is no doubt an insight into his production methods and a selfish discipline for Russo. Although the most straight forward house track on the record, it's done with excellence and stands out strongly as the best track on the record.
Cold Hands is a self describing, powerful filler track for the record. Icy cold sounds and heavily panned delays create a tense landscape, before it all lands with it's feet on the ground. Ready to keep chugging again.
Jay Haze delivers an interest remix under his FuckPony alter ego. With an exciting (and slow) intro that winds up the tempo back into house realms, I'm sure the creative DJ's will be using this to it's full potential.
