An Interview with Ruf Dug

Ruf Dug is a shadow-y figure who has been releasing a few dope edits on both his own label Ruf Kutz as well as Popular People's Front. His releases have been charted by Horsemeat disco,Optimo,Lovefingers and Moodymann - so you should probably check them out too.

How did you first get into DJing? Where you old enough to remember the acid house in the 80s?

I first saw a DJ in Ibiza, sadly not in amnesia in 88 or anything but rather a mobile DJ playin cheese tunes when I was about 7 or 8... that's when I first wanted to do it, and I finally got to have my first go on the decks when I was about 19 at an Acid Jazz night (I was not very good!).

I do remember Acid House! I was a little too young to go to the clubs but I grew up in Manchester and have fond memories of listening to the 808 state show on sunset radio back in the proverbial day... I was much more of a classical music nerd back then though, I must admit...

Where are you currently based, is the Australian visit a short term or long term thing?

These days I'm back in Manchester - I lived in Sydney for 8 years, and this is my first trip back to australia since leaving. As much as I'd like my stay to be a long one, I'm only around for a couple of weeks before heading back to the cold and rain...

How did the release on Popular People's Front come together?

Through the wonders of myspace! I made a bunch of tracks a few years ago and set up a Ruf Dug myspace and just added every single DJ/producer I thought would be into the tunes and spammed the shit out of them... a few people got back to me wanting to sign the tracks, but it seemed like nothing was gonna happen... then the PPF's shadowy representatives got in touch, they mobilised their mighty resources and the next thing you know 'Dirty' was out there causing trouble!

What's the Ruf plan for 2011?

Hahaha that's appropriate, it is pretty ruf at the moment! More releases on Ruf Kutz, a little USA tour, and also the continuation of WET PLAY, a killer new monthly party me and some chumps have got going in Manchester.
