An Interview With Yolanda Be Cool
Here is another Australian interview for you. A name that even your mum and dad would know by now, Yolanda Be Cool. After an unplanned crossover hit with fellow Sydney sider DCUP. Sylvester Martinez & Johnson Peterson are their names, and they make music that sounds like it's from another planet, full of palm trees. Under the Sweat It Out wing, they are recieving mega props from all over the globe right now from some of the biggest names in underground music. Here is what we wanted to know. Answers by Johnson Peterson of Yolanda Be Cool.
Firstly huge props on creating a tune that seems to be spreading worldwide like a virus! You're getting airtime across the globe on dance floors and radio alike, planned success?
Cheers man. Yeah...we are pretty stoked. Def not a planned success...Well...We always planned to be successful hahah but not in the sense of thinking this track would go to No.1 on Beatport and get played not just by all our favourite Deejays but also by Nova hahaha...Nova...i would have thought that was a big joke...hahahaWhat drove you guys to start a collaboration in the first place?
Well....we live nearby, we are on the same label and we play lots of gigs together.....plus DCUP is an absolute legend in the studio...When did you first hear Tu Vuo' Fa' L'Americano? And when you did was it an instant "Dude we have to sample that" moment?
hahaha...well...some girls on sweat booking agency...little bambalam..awesome djs and party rockers....one of them suggested we sample it as they were playing the original...hhahOther then your recent remix of Babe Ruth - The Mexican, can we expect anything more from this ever successful collab?
For sure. We are currently remixing Hey Hey by Dennis Ferrer...plus a remix for an italian label of a track called Sing Sing plus we are going sample shopping right now for the next follow up...:)Were there any tracks or artists in particular that you drew inspiration from when you started this project?
Sylvester and I love anything weird that is also functional on a dancefloor...Samim's Heater or Claude's Deep Throat...so weird...but yet......rocked it so hard on the floor when they came out....so i guess we were inspired to make weird shit that works hahaahObviously both successful in your own right you guys didn't opt for a different name on this project but stuck with what people knew, was there any thought behind this?
Yeah..we didn't really think of it like that.....Collabs are pretty common so it was just...let's collab....DCUP has one coming with another sweat artist...Pablo Calamari and we have done one with another sweat guy again..Playmode from tasmania...so just collabs...we should do one with you![]()
Staying on the point of each of you being your own entity, how was it working as 3 people, was it an all of in the studio at once affair as you are all sydney siders? And also with quite a difference in style, do you believe you've found a recipe for making good music together now?
Hmm...well the cup is sriously such a legend he could make amazing gabba if he had to...but yeah...i think good in the sense that we do have some differing ideas that make things work well....but yeah...good times...lots of coffee breaks and good food around...After recently being treated to an hour and a half set from both YBC and DCUP in Adelaide, do you think there will ever be a Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP collaborative DJ set?
well...without sounding like wankers...we had some very exciting news recently which will see us most def doing some gigs as 3..or one hahaha...though we can't announce it just yet..Any there any producers or DJ's that you think have done brilliant things for dance music in the past 5 years?
Claude Von Stroke, the Martins Brothers, Zombie Disco Squad, Solo, Daniel Steinberg, Jamie JonesIf there was one thing you could wish for at every gig. What would it be?
FUN!!!!
So there you have it, one of the countries most popular producers right now and still one of the nicest guys ever. I look forward to hearing and seeing big things from these guys. Buy their tunes because they deserve it. Beatport is right there <---
